HCI Supervisory Committee Meeting September 12, 2007

Present: Jim Oliver, Brian Mennecke, ChiuShui Chan, Steven Herrnstadt, Julie Dickerson, Jeremiah Still, Pam Shill.

Report from the Student Body:

Jeremiah reported that all is well with the student body. He is thinking of recording the meetings in some way next semester to make them available to students not able to attend in person.

Curriculum Committee Update:

Brian reported that the first meeting will be this afternoon. They plan to have a report to the faculty at the faculty retreat. Jim asked for the group to remember that the HCI program hired Chad Harms and Chris Harding to teach courses in HCI. Cross-listing of courses with HCI was discussed with the question asked “Why is it beneficial for a college to cross-list a course with HCI?” Jim will speak to Dave Holger in the Grad College to get information about this. Pam will bring the list of HCI cross-listed courses to the next meeting.

HCI Faculty Retreat Update:

The HCI Faculty Retreat will be held on Wednesday, December 5. This date should be publicized now to get maximum attendance. ChiuShui will be helping to set the agenda, with the 5 year program review in mind. Jim Oliver will facilitate the retreat. It was suggested that students and faculty are surveyed to see what they see as the issues of the program. Students might meet in small groups, for example home departments, to discuss issues in order to get input from a larger percentage of the student body. Jim suggested that the Retreat begin with a luncheon celebration of the program’s 5 year anniversary for both faculty and students, with opening remarks by Dave Holger. Then faculty would meet to discuss issues, and after that the Supervisory Committee could meet to discuss action items.

Non-thesis MS Update:

The Grad College Curriculum Committee has not met this fall because a chair has not been appointed yet. The proposal will be reviewed when a chair is appointed and the committee meets.

Spring Courses:

HCI 575X will be offered by Alex Stoytchev and Chad Harms is working on an experimental course form for a course on societal implications of HCI. It was determined that the HCI 591 Seminar will also be offered this spring with a different HCI faculty member leading the discussion each week.

Admissions Deadline for Fall:

Because the Recruiting Open House will be held on February 1, the admissions deadline was moved to January 15 for the fall semester. This will enable our program to have the bulk of the applications in by the Open House and give our program time to make offers by the April 15 national deadline.

Jim Oliver will send out another call for nominations to fill the open position on the committee.

Next meeting is Wednesday, October 10 at 9 am in the VRAC Allbaugh Conference Room.
