Present: Jim Oliver, Brian Mennecke, ChiuShui Chan, Steven Herrnstadt, Jeremiah Still, Pam Shill. Absent: Julie Dickerson
Jeremiah Still, the new HCI student group president, reported that the student group will meet weekly on Mondays at 2:10 pm in Room 20 Howe Hall. The Usability Professionals Association of Iowa would like to have their October monthly meeting at VRAC. Jim Oliver will coordinate this with Dan Nebbe from Principal.
An all ISU REU meeting was held last week, with the decision made to hold the joint Research Forum on Friday, August 1. Our program will run from May 27-August 1, 2008. Applications will be accepted beginning October 1, 2007. The deadline for applications will be February 1, 2008. Offers will be made in February and March. Declined students will be notified by April 1, 2008. We would like to have the five research projects listed on the website for prospective applicants to view. Jim Oliver will send out a request for projects to faculty very soon. Stephen Gilbert will reapply for REU grant funding for the future.
Brian Mennecke will chair the curriculum committee and ChiuShui agreed to serve on the committee. An invitation to HCI faculty will be sent to recruit 2 additional members. This committee will be in place for the fall semester only and is charged with reviewing the HCI curriculum to make it less dependent on individual faculty and departmental resources and to provide flexibility for the students. This committee will recommend a menu of courses in the core areas of HCI, which will be reviewed and voted on by the HCI faculty. This is to be accomplished by the end of the fall semester.
An HCI Faculty retreat will be held in December during dead week. One item for discussion at the retreat will be philosophical issues concerning the core areas of HCI.
Discussion was held about hosting an HCI Open House for applicants and potential graduate students in February. Applicants would pay their own way to ISU and would be given a program overview, research presentations, tech demos, and opportunities to meet with faculty on a one-on-one basis. This will be held on Friday, February 1. This will be the program’s opportunity to sell the program to prospective students.
Julie Dickerson’s term is up, but she offered to serve an additional term if necessary. The committee voted to accept her offer. Jim Oliver will send out a call for nominations to replace the vacancy left by Derrick Parkhurst. The hope is to fill this position by the next HCI Supervisory Committee meeting.
Next meeting is Wednesday, September 12 at 9 am in the VRAC Allbaugh Conference Room.
