HCI Supervisory Committee Meeting May 2, 2007

Present: Jim Oliver, ChiuShui Chan, Julie Dickerson, Brian Mennecke, Steve Herrnstadt, Matt Heying, Pam Shill. Absent: Derrick Parkhurst

Report from the Student Body:

The HCI Student Group will have an end of the year picnic on Friday, May 4 a Moore Memorial Park from 35 pm. All faculty and students are invited. Matt sent out a request for nominations for officers for next year, but has not had much response yet.

ETC2007 Recap:

The ETC2007 conference was a great success. Suggestions for improvement was to shorten the conference to two days, hold it earlier in April, show demos on one day only, and possibly partner with the Colleges of Design, Engineering, and Business.

Requests for Substitutions to POS:

Mack Shelley’s request to substitute two Educational Statistics courses for Stat 401 for Evrim Baran was approved. Julie Dickerson’s request to substitute ArtGr 672 and ArtIS 509X for HCI 575X for Lisa McGarthwaite was approved.

REU Update:

13 students have accepted 15 of the positions. We are still accepting applications for the last two positions. Next year our offers will be made earlier so that we are more competitive with other institutions. Stephen Gilbert will help with the REU this summer. Brian Mennecke suggested either Janea Triplett or Dawn Laux as graduate student mentors for the program. The five projects have been selected and the program runs from May 29-August 4.

Fall Admissions Update:

We have 84 applications for the Fall semester and 4 offers have been accepted. Three students will be admitted this summer. Further work with the departments on HCI admissions is needed, since there is hesitancy in some departments to use departmental funding for HCI students. The HCI Fellowship may not be given out this year and funding may be held over for next year.

Non-thesis Option:

A draft of the proposal to create a non-thesis MS option for the program will be sent out to committee members for review and edits.

Supervisory Committee Members terms:

Julie Dickerson’s term expires and a replacement for Derrick Parkhurst will be needed. Jim Oliver will send out a request to faculty for nominations for these positions.

Curriculum Discussion:

It was decided that HCI 591, the HCI Seminar, will be offered this fall with Jim Oliver leading the course. Each week, different HCI faculty members will be asked to suggest a journal article for the students to read and then will lead the discussion. Deb Satterfield has offered to create a course similar to ArtGr 672 for off-campus students. Chad Harms received departmental permission to teach an HCI course on Societal Implications of HCI in the Spring 2008. It was suggested that he work with Tony Townsend as he creates his course content.

Jim Oliver announced that a search committee will be formed to find a replacement for Derrick.

Next meeting is Wednesday, June 6 at 9 am in the VRAC Allbaugh Conference Room.
