HCI Supervisory Committee Meeting
December 7, 2005
9 am in the VRAC Albaugh Conference Room
Minutes:
Present: Jim Oliver, Chair, Derrick Parkhurst, Associate Chair, Tony Townsend, Chad Harms, Chiu S. Chan,
Julie Dickerson, Pam Shill
Absent: Ken Kopecky, Lynette Sherer
Report from student body: Ken was not present but had emailed the committee letting them know that all was going well and that Tyler Streeter talked about his intelligent agents research at their last meeting of the semester.
Graduate Faculty status for Dale Niederhauser and Nir Keren: Jim will send the vitas out for approval.
HCI 575X approval status update: The experimental course form is routing through LAS for signatures. Pam will follow it through and work to get the course listed so students can enroll by the end of next week. After this course is on the system, Pam will send an email out to all HCI students letting them know that this course can be taken as a required course, give them links to course information, and letting them know that it is open for registration.
Proposal to add Stat 430X as an alternative to the list of Research Methods courses: Dirk Reiners made a request to add Stat 430X to the list of Research Methods courses that are acceptable requirements for HCI PhD students. This was discussed and approved. Jim would like to have a discussion at a future meeting about the other courses that are on the list of Research Methods and also discuss what the committee hopes to accomplish with all required courses.
HCI Forum: Presentations: Jim has talked to Tyler Streeter, Jared Knutzon, and Lew Hill and asked them to present at the Forum. Michelle Rusch will also be asked to present, but since she presented last year, it will be her choice. Pasha Antonenko will traveling home from an English Conference on April 12, but will see if he can change his travel plans so that he can present. It was suggested that we invite alums back to present, possibly Melinda Cerney. Jim will send out a call to the students in January and also send them information about the forum then. A point to point audio/visual transmission will be sent to the Design Center Auditorium and it was decided that a point to point to the Gerdin Business building would not be necessary. Pam will check into a point to point to the Memorial Union for visibility.
