Present: Jim Oliver, Julie Dickerson, ChiuShui Chan, Doug Gentile, Jeremiah Still, Pam Shill. Absent: Brian Mennecke and Steven Herrnstadt
Jeremiah reported that the students are having a social event tonight. ChiuShui would like to know of any issues or concerns that the students may have about the program so that they may be discussed at the retreat.
Jim Oliver reported that the Search Committee met on Monday and the committee agreed that hiring a person on the “H” side of HCI was a priority. The committee will edit the ad and then discuss where it will be placed. Suggestions for placement of the ad are welcome.
The Faculty Retreat and anniversary celebration luncheon will take place on Friday, December 7. A survey has been sent to the faculty and students asking for their comments for discussion at the retreat. ChiuShui would like to focus on four priorities at the retreat: curriculum structure, new hire priorities, student concerns, and departmental relationships. It is estimated that 100 people will attend the luncheon. New hires from across the university will be invited to the luncheon.
Pam will work with Brian on a final report from the committee.
Our program will hold an HCI Open House on February 1 to recruit new students and to inform undergraduate advisors of the program. It will be important for faculty to participate so that they can meet some of the applicants to the program. Our hope is that this will help our faculty to make more timely offers of admission to our applicants and allow us to be more efficient in the recruiting process.
Jim Oliver will meet with Doug Jacobson and Doug Gemmill about creating a proposal to the graduate college about establishing a capstone course for the off-campus MS program. This will help us grow the program, and might make mentoring off-campus students more attractive to faculty. The proposal to establish a non-thesis MS option will be reviewed this Friday by the Graduate Curriculum Committee.
Pam presented a draft of a checklist for the POS committees so that they are aware of the HCI program requirements. This checklist will help the POS committees determine if students have met the requirements of the program. Pam will edit the checklist per the discussion and bring it back to the committee at the next meeting.
Jim Oliver announced that Michael Schrage will speak on April 4 at ETC2008. Ignite IT will be held on Thursday evening, April 3, followed by the HCI Forum on Friday, April 4.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday, December 5 at 9 am in the VRAC Conference Room.
