HCI Supervisory Committee Meeting January 10, 2007

Present: Jim Oliver, Derrick Parkhurst, ChiuShui Chan, Steve Herrnstadt, Brian Mennecke, Julie Dickerson, Matt Heying, Pam Shill.

Report from the Student Body:

Students are asking for update on Forum dates and poster deadlines. Pam will provide this information to them. They also would like to hold an eportfolio workshop this semester. Pam will work with Matt on this. The students will have a tent during Veishea for HCI student displays. Discussion about the group participating in the parade and handing out small trinkets such as 3D glasses was held. Pam will investigate the cost of trinkets and work with student group on this.

Service Requirement:

The students that attend the student group meetings support adding a service requirement. Derrick will write a proposal to include examples of types of service that could be used to satisfy this requirement. This requirement would begin with students that are admitted during the Fall 2007 semester. Pam will include this in the check list that she is creating for the POS committee.

Thesis/Non-Thesis Option:

Derrick and Pam have been investigating creating a non-thesis option of the degree program, aimed at off-campus students. Proposal to add a non-thesis option needs Graduate Curriculum Committee and Provost approval and possibly approval by the Board of Regents. Pam will find out if we can limit this option to off-campus students only. .

HCI Forum:

HCI Forum will be held over a three day period, April 25, 26, 27 and will be held in conjunction with the C6 Grand Opening and the Institute announcement and kick-off. Wednesday April 25, will be the student poster sessions and demos, Thursday April 26 will be C6 tours, and Friday, April 27 will be the speaker, Guy Kawaski. Jim and Derrick are looking for a speaker from either Google or Microsoft for Wednesday. Chui Shiu will ask his international delegation if they will be able to attend and speak during these dates. More information will be announced as it is determined.

Curriculum Discussion:

Time ran out before this discussion could take place. Matt has a proposal from a student that he would like to present that concerns the HCI curriculum. He will send this proposal to committee members before the next meeting and it will be put on the agenda for discussion at the next meeting.

Brian asked if any HCI students or faculty were involved in Second Life. Matt will ask the students if this is something that they are interested in investigating, for either research or exposure for the program.

Next meeting is Wednesday, February 7 at 9 am in the VRAC Allbaugh Conference Room.
