Last Day in the Lab
Wow, today is the last day that we going to be working at the lab (not officially). About the exporter... ok we just skip for now how to get the length of the bone to continue on with the actual plan, get a skeleton out of Maya and draw it in OSG. The result are... ok we manage to have a skeleton, but all the bones are tied up lol. We still working on it to see what are actually the problems. Congrats! to Cole, for being old today. Tomorrow is the demos and presentation!, I should go to bed earlier if not, I'm going to sleep standing up lol (by the way that goes with all of you guys, but you know, sometimes the effort of working hard worth it).

Presentation Practice
Wow, today was the demo practice and went so fast that I just can't believe it. We all having cool stuff to show. I wonder what kind of organization will we have on Friday for all this demos. This summer has pass so fast, that I just remembered like yesterday when I said that this was a long summer.

The Count Down Start's
Only 4 days left and this over..., ok is true time fly fast. Today we just got another paper correction weeeeeee (ouch more change have to be done), I need has much correction we can get for the paper, because we want it to be perfect. About the exporter, YES!, finally getting close to some results. Well cya later, I need to work.

BrianRussell - 29 Jul 2008 - 23:12

It sounds like we're doing similar work as far as paper corrections go.

Last Week Together
Ummmm...., like every body knows, this our last week together, so that means, THAT I HAVE TO TAKE A LOT OF PICTURES!!! By the way, that also means, lot of work and less hours for sleeping booyahh!, and I don't know what else to blog about...

July 25th 2008

PWSE Cheerleading
Well today as everyone knows, we went to CHEER FOR OUR GIRLS !!!!!!, anyway I was spec ting more girls there (no seriously), because in the other PWSE meeting that we have attend (maybe is cause I'm blind) I have see more girls there. Well today Exporter...fail, it didn't export what I spec ted, I needed geometry blend, but nothing. Im looking for MEL scripts flags at the moment, so I can modify the code, but I need a hierarchical structure... I hope the artists have a character or a bone, so I can work with it.

MMORPG sickness
Well, like I say in journal club, I dislike now MMORPG and I don't play video games like before (I kept that secret (=P)). To tell the truth I found that MMORPG are addicted and consume a good quality of time, I know that some people say " at the end the only thing that matter is to be happy", that's truth OK, but not what makes people is always good for them. Video games is just another way of entertainment, nothing beat up reality, and believe me , nothing will. Don't be offended guys, but I don't want others to waste time like I did. There's more in live than just video games and survival, there are things that are worth to die for, there are moments to suffer and moments to be at peace, but whatever we do lets make live a good experience for us, and others.

Under Pressure
Dun, dun, dun, dun,dun , dun, dun x2, "Mm ba ba de Um bum ba de Um bu bu bum da de Pressure pushing down on me Pressing down on you no man ask for"

Hahaha, I needed to do that, I can see every body pressure (specially mine), because of the paper. That happen, I hope you guys find this funny and laugh a bit (we really need to, our time here is almost done), never mind. Ok, today I just did something I didn't really needed to do in python... what a waste and I see that the exporter is going to be more work than expected =P. About lunch, wow I haven't eat that much in a while now I'm full and can't really move (that happen when I don't eat breakfast), but anyway, good luck everyone.

DavidOluwatimi - 24 Jul 2008 - 16:07

.....You are a Spartan!!!NEVER GIVE UP, NEVER SURRENDEER

NizarKhalife - 23 Jul 2008 - 19:12

I hear starving yourself is unhealthy.

ThomasNiedzielski - 23 Jul 2008 - 16:19

By the way, today's the 23rd.

ThomasNiedzielski - 23 Jul 2008 - 16:19

We're finally putting things together, and the programs are changing in unexpected ways. You guys at least don't have that to deal with that weirdness.

July 22th 2008

Luncheon
Today's luncheon was a wise one. Jim Oliver talk about a lot of things that sometimes, professors don't tell to students. I knew some stuff about it, but i didn't know that there was 2 different kind of research application. Also, to tell the truth about our paper... I just waiting for Stephen review (I hope we don't have much to change this time). My stick dude now have skin on it, but still need some adjustments. About the Maya exporter...I have to start working on it again, since I'm close to get it (I guess), if not ... I'll be going crazy making it happen. For now my first victim is a 3D woman model, if I can export all the texture, vertices and transformation on it, BANG!, it will be done.

NizarKhalife - 22 Jul 2008 - 20:12

Don't get too attached to her, now.

JennaLanger - 22 Jul 2008 - 17:08

I can't wait to see an actual character doing jumping jacks on your screen!

July 21th 2008

Why so serious?
Another day writing a paper, today is more of the same, try to finish the paper, improve it and wait till someone tells you "Change it" lol. After this is done I'll be more relax (not completely) and be working again with my stick dude (I putting some skin on it). I almost forgot that I need to find a way to make Maya spit a script , with the transformations, animations and objects of the scene. Today's luncheon open more my eyes (it just remembered me some stuff that I have to do back home) to new goals. Well, I have to get back to the paper.

July 17th 2008

Paper or sticky note?
No good, this look like a sticky note instead of a paper, anyway at least I'm getting the drift now. I want to finish this draft so I can jump again to OSG (if my stress goes away, I'll be able to finish soon this) and to try how to export mesh and seleton to OSG using Maya.

EvaTao - 22 Jul 2008 - 00:32

Do not forget to blog!!

July 16th 2008

Dining with style
Ok, is not funny when aperson eats a salad in 1hr, specially if that person is you (in this case me). I almost go crazy, trying to eat with etiquette and elegance, but is good to know some stuff about it, if is related with work. Well I think I'm going to keep killing myself with the paper.

July 15th 2008

Long way to go
I finally manage to finish the algorithms (thx to Kabala actually), but every time I finish my mild stones, the things gets even more tricky and difficult :P. Tonight is Super Frisbee night and I'm not sure if I'm going, but lets see how is my mood. Now I need to get info about Maya animation and skeleton documentation (using programing) so I can use it to export stuff from Maya to OSG ( If anyone knows, share the knowledge lol). The hard part about all this is looking for articles related to what I'm doing. There are a lot of articles about inverse kinematics , but not that much about the specific skeleton animation that I'm working on (is not curve skeleton animation, I so it means that is lineal).

NizarKhalife - 16 Jul 2008 - 18:56

Finding articles is indeed tough.

July 14th 2008

Mall of Desception
Nooooo!, we went to the mall and I didn't find anything that i wanted, the leather store close...no jacket. Anyway, it have been a fast weekend for me, I need to get the algorithm done (I have something, i hope it works) and fix the poster info.

NizarKhalife - 14 Jul 2008 - 19:06

Mall of America really pulled one over on you. You won't be able to get those 6 hours back.

July 9th 2008

AND HIS EYES LOOK LIKE FLAME
Ok I just can't read, I been working with the draft and I think that i finally got it now. i just can't read anymore I feel like fire comming out of my eyes they burn and sting so much that I'm regretting going late to bed (but actually the overnight work worth it), but a REU student got to do what a REU student got to do. Probably I'll be falling to sleep like david did yesterday, omg he snore a lot (just kidding), but I just can't stand my eyes, my body fills fine but my head is like light and my eyes are like 2 fireballs (I wonder if this what Cyclops feels when he takes his shades off), just remember Journal Club tomorrow and the poster draft too.

NizarKhalife - 10 Jul 2008 - 20:32

Computer screens only hurt the eyes of the weak! Computers are the future! And french fries! Deal with it!

DavidOluwatimi - 10 Jul 2008 - 08:54

Hold up, I dont snore!!!!

EvaTao - 10 Jul 2008 - 01:09

I think you need sleep _

JennaLanger - 09 Jul 2008 - 17:13

I think they need to create a new computer screen that doesn't make your eyes hurt - or you can just wear my sunglasses again.

July 8th 2008

Workaholic
Sup guys, Mr.Lego is back.. I mean hi. Well today was the judges vs Eric (cheer !). Eric presentation was cool and also he kind of look like a Asian James Bond all dress up lol (just kidding), about VJ, I really wanted to go to his defense too. I just hope that both of them have defended well their thesis. Today is going to be a long night, I need to finish the skeleton (thx to the error that I make in the library of animation lol) and animate it, so that tomorrow i can attach the meshes.

July 7th 2008

Farmer Fashion
Woot!, today we went to John Deere factory and they're clothes are very spensive! I been thinking of buying a tractor and put in it some chainsaw and stuff to make it a monster truck lol, but is better this way since probably Brian will ask for the keys and never bring them back lol or Travis will go crazy with it. Today I try some stuff for the making of my skeleton and the result went...ERROR!, hahhaha. I just need to deal with it quick, because the quicker i fix it, the more I get to work with and I really want to male a drag doll to put some animation on it.

July 3rd 2008

Time Fly away
Wow!, today time went fast is already noon and we haven't spend that much time in the lab ( journal club...). Today journal club was errg... kind of fuzzy, I know that Tom and I pick it up, but I still didn't understand much about it, I just came up with some random questions just for the sake of saying something. About the OSG part, I want to finish it quick to mess with the characters meshes and if i finish soon enough (before deadline) I will be able to play with Rag dolls woohooo! By the way rag dolls reminds me of Cole getting Ippon in the Judo tatami lol.

SamanthaLevine - 03 Jul 2008 - 13:35

Yeah- I'm glad we have the next 3.5 hours to sit in the lab and get some work done before the WEEKEND!!

July 2th 2008

Trap in PWSE
Ok, this the last time I go to a PWSE meeting, I felt like I was trap in the land of the Amazon (but I actually like it) I'm just joking, but I really felt like I was in a support group hehe (no offense), but that's what I was there for, just to support the PWSE woman and also to take any info about poster or any kind of thing about grad school. The day have been so slow and sleepy, I think I'm turning into a Slowpoke... Anyway, today is the ice skating trip and I think is going to be a let down since everyone is like "Nah, I think I'm not going", I hope no one try to do the same for the Mall of America trip or I'm going to revolt lol ( I want that leather jacket so bad and also need to get a present for my dad b-day).

EvaTao - 07 Jul 2008 - 17:56

I will drive all of you there to the Mall of America with Catherine!!

NizarKhalife - 03 Jul 2008 - 11:09

At this point you've built up the expectation for that leather jacket so much that I'm half expecting it to have a swiss army knife in the sleeve and keep your entire body dry in the rain.

JennaLanger - 02 Jul 2008 - 16:07

One more PWSE meeting to go! hope you can handle it!

ThomasNiedzielski - 02 Jul 2008 - 14:56

Oh crud, I still need to get something for Father's Day! Maybe I can pick something up in town. I'm glad your need for the Mall of America reminded me. By the way, I'll be ice skating today, so you won't be the only person there.

July 1rst 2008

Improving
Well today I finally did something good with my program, but still didn't work(compiler didn't show errors),so Kabala put his magical hands on it and boom, the program was different in every aspect. Anyway today's ethic class was good, I mean I really enjoy how Stephen Gilbert give the class and the sexism was a controversy lol. There's no much to say except that I took a nap again and yes Cody, I was tired today again lol.

There's no rest in the living
Hi lady's and gentlemen, Mr. Lego is back...I think i sound like David for a second lol. Anyway, sorry that I stop putting pictures in the blog, but the thing is that I been reading a lot about Matrices in OpenGL to be able to work better with my project. Today HCI class time passed very quickly and we didn't even got a discussion about a topic, except for the comments about the new internet called "Grid", I guess?, but still I feel like rag doll right now. I realize that there's no time for rest for the living and plenty for the death, but since I'm alive I have to finish and read that book to get my hands again into the animation library.

If you read this Matt, heres the link for the OSG main web, they have tutorials there http://www.opensg.org/doc-1.6.0/TutorialIntroduction.html [Intro to OpenSG ]

DavidOluwatimi - 30 Jun 2008 - 11:44

lol, you're funny, trying to imitate me. I am kinda glad that I didn't go into animation because I see how much you have to read, but hey, do what you do how you when you gotta do it cuz you chose it and now you must finish it. You are a SPARTAN!!! NEVER GIVE UP, NEVER SURRENDER

DavidOluwatimi - 30 Jun 2008 - 11:44

The Grey Day
I woke up, looked at the clock and it was 5:00am my sleep got disturbed, so I went out for some exercise. After all the routine I do in the morning and after getting here "shazam" Kabala appears with a book about OpenGL and Matrices. I been reading the whole day, first the HCI: "word of the day" and then the info about matrices, I been sleepy and trying to put my mind together (to much stuff to learn all of a sudden) to get this project done with patience and spending my time on it without switching my attention. I guess some of you feel some pressure too, about getting things done. Anyway I just didn't know what to blog so I just put my routine of the day here. By the way Peter Answer still not real, you hear me Cole lol.

EvaTao - 27 Jun 2008 - 15:44

Do you have more photos to post or that's all?

AllisonWhite - 27 Jun 2008 - 14:01

I agree about Peter Answer, but I have to admit that it won't answer my questions because it says I don't believe in it

CodyGlover - 27 Jun 2008 - 13:41

Waking up at 5? No wonder your always passed out at lunch.

June 24th 2008

Psychology
Wow, todays luncheon spook me, now I know how video games affect your brain and how they help your in spacial area or something like that I can't really remember jaja. I really need a Psychologist haha. Anyway, today I add more pics and there are more coming up and also I gave Eva my videos today, so maybe tomorrow or for Thursday they shall be on the Wiki.

June 23th 2008

Like I promise
Here are some of the pictures that I promise, sorry for not been blogging that much, but the thing is that I'm getting a bit over stress with this OpenSG stuff, I didn't tough that animating a character was so much work, but I like it. Like you know there are more pictures to add and some videos, but I'll be adding them soon.

EvaTao - 24 Jun 2008 - 03:48

Thanks John. They are wonderful!!

DavidOluwatimi - 30 Jun 2008 - 11:45

Funny, I like the way you think.

NizarKhalife - 23 Jun 2008 - 23:38

Great group picture! Love the Cole > Sam picture!

BrianRussell - 23 Jun 2008 - 21:42

The mess

Now I'm confuse. I think that yesterday blog was today blog, I can't remember to do corrections.

June 19th 2008

The presentation
Today all the teams presented they're OpenGL project, they were all awesome, by the way nice physics. The duck hunt was cool, it reminds me of the old days and even inspire me to have like a personal project (I'm gonna try to remake street fighter, more old school stuff !). I can't take from my head the walking in the fog project, it was the only project in were cool effects could be seen (no offense to the tornado project rain), but all the scenic stuff was cool, the base and batman. I found hilarious the idea of putting Al Capone in a snow ski, It will be even nicer if he could jump the rocks. And for my team, nice work, we did what we could and what we wanted, except for the camera thing, but we did good. Next time lets aim to make our solar system and put some asteroids and some star wars ship on it.

NizarKhalife - 21 Jun 2008 - 16:44

I really liked the atoms a lot! Let me know if you do Street Fighter because I'd love to help you out with that! HADOUKEN!

Tired like the rest of you
Wow today was a really tiresome day, I didn't even have strength to sleep lol. For real, we all did our best putting all our minds in the OpenGL projects, I can't wait to see what everybody did in OpenGL . By the way, I wish I had more time for the GL project, I wanted to add more things to it.

SamanthaLevine - 19 Jun 2008 - 09:13

You guys were working super hard. Good luck today! Your atom/flower/whatever is so sweet!

June 17th 2008

Going cuckoo
I'm too quick for the photographer!, here is one of the many pictures we took today (wait till the photographer post the real ones, so you guy's can have a better picture), by the way today luncheon conference was neat, It felt like a class and the Carnegie Learning program is amazing!, all the things that the tutor can correct and the best part is how neat it looks when he correct. Anyway, today Vijay took it easy on us hehe, but I really wanted to do learn more about OpenGL .

BrianRussell - 17 Jun 2008 - 22:50

I was hoping to learn more about OpenGL as well, but still glad for the break.

ThomasNiedzielski - 17 Jun 2008 - 16:47

I think that might be my favorite picture, just because it didn't require burning off my knee hair.

JennaLanger - 17 Jun 2008 - 16:10

Wow, we are such goofballs! But what would you expect from a bunch of computer nerds.

MatthewScheinerman - 17 Jun 2008 - 14:35

Haha, great picture, John.

June 16th 2008

HCI Perosna
Today HCI was little bit...errr different. We play roles today, some people were Pizza Pit and others were web designers. The best part of today HCI course was the make a persona part, want to know why?, because my persona is a mom haha. Anyway, this week is going to be tight, a lot of work in our hands and a lot of things to practice about OpenSG and Animation.

JohnMorales - 17 Jun 2008 - 14:08

"OpenSG is a portable scenegraph system to create realtime graphics programs, e.g. for virtual reality applications".

NizarKhalife - 16 Jun 2008 - 22:05

Yeah the kick off meeting was a little weird. I guess we didn't really know what to say.

BrianRussell - 16 Jun 2008 - 17:22

What is OpenSG ?

June 13th 2008

Animation
Another neat class with OpenGL . Well I really need to know more about animation in OpenGL and specially in Maya (ouch!). if anyone knows about a good tutorial for animation in any of this programs let me know, because the more info I can get the better, if I find something I will post it and by the way here's my Maya object.

June 12th 2008

OpenGL
So far, so good, the OpenGL class is awesome, first the simple assignment of writing your name and now make a body for a car, awesome. Also, today luncheon lecture was with Mike Oren, and guess what his another python language user ( woohooo! at last someone that likes python), he even told us about working with Guido Van Rossum (creator of Python) in Google. Here's a link that shows a report of Google HQ Google HQ, what do you guys think now on working there? hahaha.

A little History about Python:

Python was first created by Guido von Rossum in 1990 and was named after the Brit-com Monty Python's Flying Circus. If you want to know more google it lol.

DavidOluwatimi - 12 Jun 2008 - 17:47

GOOGLE IS SO FREAKIN COOL THAT THEY HAVE CREATED THEIR OWN VERB. ITS CALLED "GOOGLEIT" Pronounced "GOOGLE IT", but you gotta say it fast.

JennaLanger - 12 Jun 2008 - 17:40

Me me!!! I want to work at google!!! I also want to learn python now, since he said it's a pretty easy language. What do you think?

BrianRussell - 12 Jun 2008 - 17:26

I agree OpenGL is pretty cool.

June 10th 2008

The Maya
Finally, we using Maya. I want to make a person on it (don't think I'll have time for it), but I'm doing a laptop instead. This getting fun, tomorrow is the OpenGL class. By the way does anybody know of a great tutorial for Maya? I found a web that teach how to make a crab pong game (when I get the link again I'll post it) using OpenGL .

EvaTao - 12 Jun 2008 - 02:59

Blog today?

NizarKhalife - 11 Jun 2008 - 23:58

That would be awesome. If you find that link be sure to give it to me.

EvaTao - 11 Jun 2008 - 05:42

Check with the instructorsss as well. They might have some links on their mind. I am wondering if there is a way to post your game on the team blog so everyone can play? Show us what you have done on Maya so far.

JohnMorales - 11 Jun 2008 - 01:34

Heres the link for the crab game OpenGL CrabGame

June 9th 2008

Busy day
Finally the programming class project is almost over. Right now Jenna is bossing us around and pointing Oluwatimi and I with the finger and saying "DO IT", ahaha Im just kidding, thank God we have a Jenna in our team! She really knows how to play Yahtzee (maybe she gambles, who knows).

NizarKhalife - 11 Jun 2008 - 00:27

I know! That Jenna can be so pushy sometimes!

*joking*

ThomasNiedzielski - 09 Jun 2008 - 19:39

I have to say, you guys really got Yahtzee down! Congratulations on a well-done project!

June 5th 2008

Bad Mood
No wonder Paul told me " hay John, you haven't done your assignment", awwwww, I didn't add the links (the only one that I haven't done is the one with the files, yet). I hope that I didn't erase them from the Lab PC (I like to empty the recycle bin) , because i don't have them in my pen either. Here are the photos that I promise.

EvaTao - 06 Jun 2008 - 02:36

Nice pictures smile

Personality Test
I'm impress how this test was kind off accurate (maybe with me). Today HCI class was cool, how we get to know each other personality and that stuff. About the programming class, It was one heck of a review for me. First, the tokenizing or whatever is call and STL map (quick view).

Put your content here.

ThomasNiedzielski - 04 Jun 2008 - 17:10

I actually hadn't used a string tokenizer until today. I usually don't work with words.

June 3th 2008

Day Review
In today programming class I warmed up my brain, the funny part is that I forgot some syntax about loops, but I got them now (brain refresh). One thing if you do for(;;) in C++, you get a infinite loop, that you can stop it by adding break; in your code. Another thing that someone can do is make a do while loop and inside you can add a code, to make it stop you can put for example; while(answer = n || answer = N), so if the user press n or N the program stop. About ASCII, I made a simple function to print a dice in some kind of 3D way. If someone needs to see it, just ask me I also accept sugestions. About Wii night, sorry I'm a bad player, but I don't have any new gen game console and the only games that I'm good at are: Street Fighters (all 2d fighting game that looks the same) and Guilty Gear XX, so sorry and also forgive me for not socialize in Wii night, I was fighting with the visual compiler and the Yahtzee dice. By the way, I'm gonna add some pictures soon.

EvaTao - 04 Jun 2008 - 04:07

Please do add some Photos. Check the code I did in Photo page so you can show smaller size also provide a link for regular size.

Visual C++ 101
We got today the first class of programming and 1/2 of tomorrow class. I tough that Eric was going to execute us today, but he didn't (for now). I'm ashamed of myself, I can't program like I use to in C++, because I forgot a lot of things that I just happen to refresh (some of them) my mind today. About the group proposal we decide to make a Yahtzee program...let's gamble (try not to, because I will program just to win ).

EvaTao - 03 Jun 2008 - 00:53

Hey John, could you vote the movies you like when you get a chance?

May 31th 2008

OpenSG Targeted
At last another warm day at Iowa and the best part is that David Kabala (META!BLAST team mentor) gave David and I some tutorials in Open SG. We installed visual C++ and Open SG. Just in case you guys wonder what it is and what it do, Open SG is a portable scenegraph system to create realtime graphics programs, for virtual reality application using Open GL. Now that I got some tutorials, I can start looking at the codes and practice. If anyone wants to know how to install visual studio, try downloading the 2005 version, because thats the open source one (I'm not that sure about it cause It gave me 30 days to register it). But the most funny part of the day was how we find each other in Target lol, that was random.

Hey John, Could you put the latest blog on the top? That way will be easier for us to view your blog. Also, You might want to add in 's Blog after your name on the top...and your name need only showing once (You can delete the one between Jasmine's posting and May 30, 2008, also between Desiree's posting and May 31th 2008)!!

Research, Programming class and others
I remember that someone once told me that research is the pursuit of knowledge in something that I haven't seen or know. Anyway, I'll stop philosophizing =P. I'm wondering, how will Eric treat us in the programming class hahahaha (evil laugh) lol (just kidding), but I just can't wait for the OpenGL course.

I thought you couldn't wait for the MAYA one? Were we even having maya? But, yeah, I can't wait for the programing class as well. I feel like taking all over again, though Idalyn might get angry if she finds out I don't remember much about C++

How you feel?
Since I arrive here I been thinking just in Maya, OpenGL and the project, I'm so exited that I can't sleep! Woohooo META!BLAST ftw. I was looking into the PC video card and I found that they use the NVIDIA Quadro FX 3450, ummm is that better than the AMD's ATI FireGL V8600? Anyway, I just can't wait to start learning OpenGL . I'm I the only one feeling this way, because after I look the demos from the projects I just wanted to put my hands in all of them lol.

About the video cards, the ATI FireGL 8600 is probably better overall since its a later generation video card and is superior in most technical video card criteria. That being said, the Quadro FX 3450 would still probably beat the crap out of any of the cards that we own.

Thanks for the link, thats really cool. I wonder how they did it though- it looked like the animation was being rendered in the camera feed before it got to the laptop.

Looks better now. You might want to add in 's Blog after your name on the top...and your name need only showing once (You can delete the one between Jasmine's posting and May 30, 2008)!!

Hey John, Did you delete your name on the very top of your blog as well when you delete mine at very bottom? Did you delete * when you delete put your topic here (please click edit to see the code)?

JasmineJones - 29 May 2008 - 22:37

I know what you mean! Everything is just so interesting. I've read about all this cool graphics research being done in OpenGL and now I get to learn it. Woohoo!
