Noel Schaeffer
Bio: Noel is originally from Torrance, CA, grew up mostly in Sioux Falls, SD, and currently resides in Vermillion, SD. He's a full-time doctoral student working on completing his PhD in Human Factors Psychology at the University of South Dakota. He is a teaching assistant in the Learning & Memory and Sensation & Perception Psychology Labs.
He became interested in the HCI program at Iowa State for several reasons. First, he feels that the ubiquitous nature of computer technology in today's world makes it imperative that professionals seek to increase their knowledge in this area. As a result, he was interested in gaining more perspective in this discipline from other academic institutions. Second, the relatedness of HCI to his current field of study in Human Factors makes it an important addition to his base of knowledge. Third, the convenience of the certificate program, in terms of its distance capabilities, was really attractive to him.
His dissertation research is focused on judgment and decision making and specifically on systematically examining human's perception of risk and risky choice for the purposes of theoretical model building and scale development.
He's anticipating that the HCI program will help him both academically and professionally. Academically he thinks it will give him a better understanding of the way in which humans interact with technology and professionally it will make him more attractive to future employers.
