Human Computer Interaction Certificate Students

These students are currently working on their certificates in Human Computer Interaction at Iowa State University. Through online distance learning, students who are working in business and industry are able to take courses to learn more about HCI without having to travel to the ISU campus or committing to a full graduate program. The certificate can be earned in one to two years.

Jeanne Audino

Andrew Baughman

Bio: Andy Baughman is a web designer and developer from La Porte, Indiana. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design in 2004 from Indiana University. Andy has chosen to continue his education in the Human Computer Interaction program to build a solid foundation on which to make better objective decisions to meet the expectations and needs of the user. His research interests include software interface and interaction design, and usability.

Rosheena Bove

Bio: Rosheena is from Huntsville, Alabama and hopes to graduate in Spring 2015 with a Master’s in HCI. She became interested in HCI after she was hired on as a Visual Designer of a User Experience team. She found interaction design and HCI very interesting and decided to pursue a degree in the field to learn more and gain more experience. She is very interested in researching the cognitive aspects of HCI and how the mental models of various user generations effect the design process and experimental design. In the future, Rosheena would like to do more work with different types of products and would like to be involved in the interaction and visual design processes.

Brian Byle

Thomas Crow

Bio: Tom lives in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He is currently employed as a Senior Software Developer but has also spent time as an Analyst and as a Systems and Network Administrator. He chose the HCI Graduate Certificate Program because it provides a strong path into the field of HCI while offering opportunities to further study at the Master degree level. Tom has a broad professional background in Mathematics, Design, Architecture, Human Factors and Computer Science. His goal is to make the transition from being a generalist in Computer Science to being a specialist in HCI and move from a developer role in the projects he works on to a design role.

Hilary Davis

Bio: Hilary is from Fulton, Missouri. She has earned her B.S. in Management Information Systems and her M.S. in Business Administration. As a Quality Assurance Analyst for one of the nation’s largest financial institutions, she has witnessed firsthand the consequences of poorly designed products. These experiences were the driving forces that led her to apply to Iowa State University in hopes of obtaining a better understanding of Human Computer Interaction. Her research interests include software interface and usability testing. Her goal is to acquire new skills and knowledge, which can be used to better the world of interactive design.

Martha Fry

Tyler Gregory

Travis Guse

Bio: Travis is a software engineer and integrator who currently lives in Ocala, FL. He has a BS in Computer Science from the University of Florida and a Masters in Engineering from Arizona State University. His research interests include Extreme Programming, Data Mining, User Acceptance and Human Computer Interaction. Travis plans to utilize the HCI Certificate curriculum to advance his current professional long term projects and potentially lay the groundwork for continued academic research in HCI at Iowa State University.

Heather Longoria

Bio: Heather Longoria works full-time as a Business Analyst for a bank holding company in the Quad Cities. She is a student in the HCI – Masters Certificate program. She is interested in this program because as a business analyst, she works with stakeholders within the company to document processes and to define requirements for systems and applications to improve efficiency. Heather is hoping that the training she receives in the HCI program will enable her to better understand the needs of the stakeholders as well as help her to provide insight to the developers as they create applications, so that they can build tools that truly meet the needs of the users and that are easy-to-use. Her future goals include using the knowledge gained in this program to continue to enhance and improve the development processes at the company.

Jennifer Meyer

Bio: Robin is a freelance web and graphic designer with a background in museum studies. Her exhibit design experience combined with her web and graphic expertise, allowed her to push into the field of user interface design. She has since worked on several mobile UI designs and wishes to transfer into this area. The HCI certificate program provides an excellent means to build on her existing knowledge base and complete this transition.

Jonathan Muller

Bio: Jonathan grew up in Michigan. He has a bachelors from Michigan State University and a Master of Information Systems Management from Carnegie Mellon University. He enjoyed his HCI coursework at CMU and decided to continue his studies with the HCI program at Iowa State. Jonathan is interested in researching how data applications for busy professionals can be improved through usability design. As a Product Manager, Jonathan looks forward to bringing more user-centered design principles to his company.

Thomas Parham

Bio: Thomas is an Iowa native, raised just up the road from Ames in the small town of Nevada. He is currently a graduate student at Iowa State pursuing a PhD in Geological and Atmospheric Sciences. His research focuses on geoscience education, particularly the development and evaluation of technology-driven resources for inquiry-based teaching in large lecture format classes, lab sections, and online courses. His dissertation involves the development and critical evaluation of a Virtual Volcano platform in multiple learning contexts. While the complex dynamics of geoscientific phenomena and processes make interactive computer simulations very appealing, the geoscience education community has not yet established a best-practices framework for developing and incorporating these powerful resources. By participating in the HCI program, he hopes to gain a richer understanding of how the human factor can (and should) affect the development of simulations and other computer-based teaching resources from inception to dissemination.

Irena Vckovski

Bio: Irena graduated as an electrical engineer in Informatics from the University of Skopje in Macedonia. She now lives in Zurich, Switzerland, where she has worked for over nine years as a web developer at mitLinks. After a break for three children, she now pursues a graduate certificate in HCI and also a similar program at the Technical University of Rapperswil in Switzerland.
